IAREP / SABE / ICABEEP Conference 2011: Exeter, 12th-16th July
By the invitation of the University of Exeter, the 2011 ICABEEP/IAREP/SABE conference will be held at the university's main (Streatham) campus, about 1 Km north of the centre of the city of Exeter, in the beautiful county of Devon, south-west England. This website aims give you all the details you need and enable you to register for the conference, submit your paper, and find out more information about what you can do during the conference, and also possibilities for further visits before or after. The deadline for submission of abstracts is now past, but if there are any additional submissions, we will get them reviewed and fit them into the programme if we can. All those who submitted abstracts by Monday 28th February should receive decisions on their acceptance by 31st March. If you want to come to the conference but not to present a paper, you can of course register and book here, too.
Where Economics and Psychology Meet
The IAREP / SABE / ICABEEP conference is the annual meeting of the two largest organizations in the fields of behavioural economics (SABE) and economic psychology (IAREP). The conference aims to recognise the important contributions of both economics and psychology to our understanding of consumer behaviour and the economic world. We endeavour to nurture multi disciplinary research exploring a variety of economic problems. The annual conference, run in conjunction with ICABEEP (an umbrella organization for behavioural economics and economic psychology), attracts leading research specialists from the fields of psychology, economics, marketing, consumer behaviour and other related fields.
What is Economic Psychology?
Economic psychology is concerned with both the psychological mechanisms which underlie economic behaviour and with the psychological consequences of economic events. The field aims to allow us to make more accurate predictions about individuals’ economic behaviours and advance psychological theory more generally. IAREP (the International Association for Research in Economic Psychology) was founded in 1982 and is the natural meeting point for all those interested in the areas where psychology and economics intersect. It has a wide international membership, drawn from psychologists and economics, but also from specialists in business administration, marketing and consumer behaviour.
What is Behavioural Economics?
Behavioural economists aim to develop realistic models of economic behaviour which integrate insights from both psychology and neo-classic economics. The primary concerns of the field are the bounds of rationality (selfishness, self-control) of economic agents. SABE (The Society for the Advancement of Behavioural Economics) is an association of scholars who are committed to rigorous economic analysis and are interested in learning how other disciplines—e.g. psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, political science, and biology--further our understanding of economic behaviour. An important function of SABE is to serve as a forum for research which may not find either understanding or acceptance in conventional economics societies.
